Mathew J. Maxson pleaded guilty to the second degree murder of Fulton resident Diana M. Cooper on Friday in exchange for a sentence of 15 years to life in state prison.

Maxson, 19, admitted that he intentionally stabbed the 54-year old Cooper to death on May 24, 2000 at her 251 1/2 West First Street home.

Maxson had been selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door when he reportedly attacked Cooper with a large piece of glass. He left the scene wearing one of the victim's sweaters and later tried to sell a co-worker his sneakers that had Cooper's blood on them.

No reason for the attack has been revealed by either the prosecution or defense.

Diana Cooper worked at the Dollar Depot at the time of her death and had been the manager of the Salvation Army Thrift Store for many years before that.
