Magazine seller jailed in Novato sex assault

A traveling magazine salesman was arrested Friday on suspicion of forcing his way into a Novato woman's home and sexually assaulting her this week, police said.

Renard Amos, a 19-year-old Illinois resident, was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape, burglary and false imprisonment. Bail was set at $50,000.

The attack occurred at 3:30 p.m. Thursday on Center Road in Novato, where a salesman came to the door of a 21-year-old woman. When the woman opened her door slightly, the salesman pushed his way inside, restrained the victim and touched her over her clothing, police said.

The resident and the attacker struggled until she screamed and he ran away. The woman suffered minor injuries in the assault.

On Friday, sheriff's deputies in Lucas Valley contacted a group of traveling magazine sellers working for an out-of-state company, said Novato police Lt. Rich Hill. The group identified one of its salesmen as someone who fit the attacker's description and was working in Novato the previous day, Hill said.

Police arrested Amos in Lucas Valley as he was soliciting magazine sales door-to-door.

The victim in Novato described her attacker as black, in his early 20s and 5-feet-4-inches

to 5-feet-9-inches tall. Amos is black, 19 years old and 5-feet-9-inches tall, according to the jail's booking log.

Amos is expected to appear in court on Monday unless he posts bail over the weekend.

NOVATO: MAGAZINE SALESMAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT TO COMMIT RAPE

A magazine salesman suspected of assault with intent to rape a woman Thursday will be arraigned this afternoon in Marin County Superior Court.

Renard Amos, 19, an Illinois resident, was arrested Friday afternoon in the 1500 block of Lucas Valley Road, Lt. Rich Hill said. He is being held in the Marin County jail under $50,000 bail.

Police said Amos was posing as a book salesman when he went to an apartment in the 1500 block of Center Road Thursday afternoon. When the female tenant opened her door slightly, Amos allegedly forced his way in and fondled the woman through her clothing while restraining her, police said.

Amos and the 21-year-old woman struggled and Amos fled when the woman screamed, police said. She suffered minor injuries, Hill said.

Amos was contacted Friday at 3:20 p.m. while soliciting magazine sales door-to-door, Hill said. He was arrested for assault with intent to commit rape, residential burglary and false imprisonment. He will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. in Department M.

A traveling magazine salesman accused of sexually assaulting a Novato woman last week is a convicted sex offender who was wanted for arrest in Wisconsin, authorities said Tuesday.

Renard Amos, 19, was arraigned in Marin Superior Court on Tuesday on charges of assault with intent to commit rape during a burglary, residential burglary, false imprisonment, sexual battery by restraint and assault by means likely to cause great bodily injury, said Deputy District Attorney Linda Witong.

Amos could face seven years to life in prison if convicted, Witong said. A plea hearing is pending.

The assault occurred at 3:30 p.m. Thursday on Center Road in Novato, where a salesman came to the door of a 21-year-old woman. When the woman opened her door slightly, the salesman pushed his way inside, restrained the victim and touched her over her clothing, police said.

Police arrested Amos in Lucas Valley as he was soliciting magazine sales door-to-door. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

For the past four months, Amos has also been wanted on an arrest warrant from Dane County, Wis., where he is charged with failing to register as a sex offender, a felony, authorities said.

Police would not disclose the nature of the original sex offense because Amos was convicted in 2002, when he was a juvenile.

"We can't release the information," said Dane County sheriff's Lt. Alecia Rauch.

Amos' last known residence was in Harvey, Ill.

The name of his employer was not available.
