The Silent Killer
Of Teens And Young Adults
Letters To The Publishers
The letters that you are about to read were written to and hand delivered to the Magazine Publishers of America
(MPA) : www.magazine.org : MPA on April 5, 2004.
The MPA represents more than 240 domestic publishing companies with approximately 1,400 titles, more
than 80 international companies and more than 100 associate members.
The Magazine Publishers of America is located at 810 Seventh Avenue, 24th Floor, New York, NT 10019.
The main phone number to the MPA is (212) 872-3700. The President of the MPA is Nina Link.
On April 5, 2004 Phil Ellenbecker the director of the Dedicated Memorial Parents Group (DMPG) :
www.dedicatedmemorial.org : DMPG and Pam Christman met with
Michael Pashby former Executive Vice President/General Manager of the Magazine Publishers of America.
At the time of this meeting the National Field Selling Association (NFSA) : www.nfsa.com :
NFSA was listed on the MPA website as a member of the MPA.
Also, the NFSA website listed being a member of the MPA. The NFSA is a trade group that represents
the traveling door to door magazine and cleaner sales companies.
Phil Ellenbecker and Pam Christman along with five other families lost their children in one of the most
devastating vehicular accidents recorded in the history of the state of Wisconsin.
The Accident occurred on March 25, 1999 near Janesville Wisconsin:
Janesville Wisconsin Van Rollover March 25, 1999 and
Memorials
Jeremy Holmes an unlicensed "car handler/driver/recruiter" tried to switch seats with a front seat passenger
while traveling at 81 mph. Mr. Holmes lost control of the van and it flipped over multiple
times ejecting all but 2 of the 14 passengers.
In the end seven kids lost their lives and five were
permanently maimed for life. They were all selling magazines door to door. They were working for
Youth Employment Services a traveling magazine sales crew operated by Choan lane. YES was
owned by a magazine sales company by the name of Subscriptions Plus out of Oklahoma owned and
operated by Karleen Hillery. Subscriptions Plus and Karleen Hillery were listed on the
NFSA website as being members. The magazine subscriptions were cleared through two magazine
clearing houses: National Magazine Exchange aka Special Data Processing Corporation: http://specialdata.com :
National Magazine Exchange
and Publishers Consulting Corporation http://www.mag-full.com : Publishers Consulting Corporation
The meeting with Mr. Pashby lasted for two hours. During that time the letters displayed below were
hand delivered to Mr. Pashby. Our concerns as parents who have lost children while selling magazines
were brought to the attention of Mr. Pashby.
Mr. Pashby assured us that our concerns would be shared with the MPA members and with Nina Link the
president of the MPA. It was our original goal to meet with Nina Link but she was unavailable for the meeting.
Along with the letters we also hand delivered Dedicated Memorial Parents Group posters and asked Mr.
Pashby if he would be able to put our posters into some of the teen magazines so that both kids and
parents could be alerted to the many dangers involved when employed by a traveling magazine sales crew.
We also delivered information on other accidents that have killed magazine sales agents and articles
documenting the hideous crimes that continue to plague the door to door sales industry.
We also asked Mr. Pashby if he and the MPA could find some way to stop the distribution of their
magazines through the clearinghouses to the itinerant traveling magazine sales companies and crews
that continue to exploit and abuse children and young adults.
Over the past three years since our meeting on April 5, 2004 with Mr. Pashby the Dedicated Memorial Parents
Group has continued to supply the MPA with information on sales agent deaths, van accidents,
and crimes against homeowners. The mechanism of this communications has for the most part been
through emails sent to the MPA.
We have also phoned Mr. Pashby and the MPA general counsel Chris Nolan regarding some of the
more severe murder cases, rapes, and van accidents.

The dirty business of child exploitation is alive and well in the door to door sales industry.
Children and young adults across this country are at risk of being falsely lured into this brutal and immoral business.
Our research also shows an alarming increase of violence against anyone unfortunate enough to open their door to a traveling sales crew agent.
A lack of background checks combined with our own government’s inability to pass meaningful legislation to regulate the direct sales industry is responsible for the violence and death that has
plagued this industry for well over two decades.
But the real villains of this national tragedy are the clearing houses and publishers that on a daily basis continue the dirty business of sales by exploitation without legal entanglement.
Children and young adults across this country are being abandoned, mutilated and killed in traffic accidents, raped, and murdered. They are being exploited by people who sit back in their easy chairs
inside of luxurious offices collecting hundreds of millions of dollars a year in profits. Profits that are collected through a chain of business relationships based on direct sales and the door to
door sales industry.
This industry is a multi-billion dollar a year conglomerate that feeds on the wanderlust, inexperience and innocence of children and young adults.
As of this editorial the door to door sales industry is directly responsible for the deaths of fifty human lives that we are aware of. This industry is also responsible for countless
abandonment’s, traffic mutilations, and life long psychological injuries. The facts presented here speak for themselves. One only needs to look at the staggering amounts of media coverage
collected on our web sites to realize how very severe and devastating this problem really is.
Children and young adults are not the only victims of this soulless blood sucking industry.
Our research has uncovered an alarming trend in violent crimes being carried out against anyone unfortunate enough to open their door to a traveling sales crew member.
Many of the individuals hired by the unscrupulous fly-by-night sales crew recruiters have criminal backgrounds. Our records show that these individuals have committed some of the most heinous crimes
imaginable. Crimes that have destroyed lives and devastated families across this country.
