Driver could face charges

Authorities have identified the driver involved in Saturday's fatal car crash as Jacob Matthew Baker of no permanent address.

Although Baker did give police his correct name the day after the accident, police were unable to confirm it for several days because of some confusion over information provided by the police computer. Sgt. Richard Hoege of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said Baker, who is 26, had legally changed his name and when that name was initially entered in the system several others also appeared on the screen.

Baker is expected to face criminal charges in the Highway 16 crash that killed Scott A. Cook, 42, of Wisconsin Dells.

According to police, Cook was driving west at about 8 p.m. when Baker, who was driving a Ford Econoline van, crossed the center line, colliding nearly head-on with Cook's Buick Century. Preliminary tests have determined that Baker had been drinking alcohol before the crash, officials said.

Baker was in the area selling cleaning products for a Pennsylvania company.
