A traveling salesman involved in a fatal car crash is scheduled to appear in court April 18 for a preliminary hearing after failing to reach an agreement with the district attorney during a pretrial conference.

Jacob M. Baker, 26, of no permanent address, has been charged with three felonies for his role in the Jan. 26 death of Scott A. Cook of Wisconsin Dells. Baker, who appeared in court Thursday with his attorney Liz Mitchel, is being held on $50,000 bond for homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, second-degree reckless homicide and homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. He could face a combined prison sentence of 80 years.

According to the criminal complaint, Cook was killed when his Buick Century was struck nearly head-on by Baker's Ford Econoline van, which had crossed the center line as it was traveling east on Highway 16 in the town of Lewiston.

According to the criminal complaint, the Columbia County Sheriff's Department deputy, who was the first to arrive at the accident, said Baker's response when asked if he had been drinking was "a lot." The officer also searched the van and found a discharge slip showing Baker had received a prescription for a painkiller that stated alcohol should not be consumed with the drug.
